How to Choose Art That Speaks to You

The emotional side of collecting art and why it matters

When you walk into a room and see a piece of art that instantly moves you, there’s no logic involved. It’s not about what matches your sofa or what’s trending. It’s about a feeling, a spark, a memory, or a reflection of something you haven’t quite put into words.

At Patriota Art, that’s exactly what I believe art should do: speak to something inside you.

So if you’re not sure where to begin, here’s how to find art that truly feels like you, not just something for the wall, but something for the soul.

1. Don’t Start with the Wall. Start with You.

We’re often told to choose art that “matches the room.” But what if you chose something that matched your energy instead?

Ask yourself:

  • What colours do I feel drawn to, not just visually, but emotionally?
  • Am I craving calm or excitement? Stillness or movement?
  • Is there a place in my life that needs inspiration, healing, or boldness?

Art becomes most powerful when it reflects who you are or who you're becoming.

2. Go Beyond “Pretty”

Some of the most meaningful pieces aren’t conventionally beautiful. They’re raw, complex, or even chaotic, just like real life.

If you find yourself returning to a painting, even if you’re not sure why, listen to that instinct. That connection is personal, and that’s what makes art special.

“It feels like it was made for me.”

3. Trust Your First Reaction

That tiny catch in your breath. The little “wow” that escapes before you even realise. That’s your body saying “yes” before your mind catches up.

Trust that.

Whether it’s a limited edition giclée print or an original canvas, if it moves you emotionally, that’s the one.

4. Consider the Story

Knowing the artist's story or the message behind the piece can deepen your connection.

At Patriota Art, many paintings are rooted in Ivone’s life: her journey from Brazil to the UK, her reflections on womanhood, and the emotions behind contrast and colour.

That story becomes part of your home.

5. Know the Difference Between “Nice” and “Necessary”

When a piece is just “nice,” you might hesitate. But when it feels necessary, like you’d regret not having it; that’s your sign.

You don’t need a house full of art. You need a few pieces that truly belong to you.
